Australian firm wins $340m Downtown Line contract

AUSTRALIAN company McConnell Dowell SEA has been awarded the second contract for Downtown Line Stage 2 (DTL2), the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said yesterday.

The $339.88 million contract is to design and construct Beauty World station and associated tunnels, LTA said.

The station, along Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jurong Kechil, will double as a Civil Defence shelter.

Construction is scheduled to start in the coming second quarter and finish in 2015.

The fully underground, 16.6km DTL2 will have 12 stations and one depot.

It will link commuters from the Bukit Timah corridor to the North East Line, North South Line and Circle Line, connecting the northwestern part of Singapore to the Marina Bay area.

This is the first LTA construction contract for McConnell, which is also working on a new bridge connecting mainland Singapore to Sentosa.

The company has also recently completed cable tunnel projects in Singapore.

The first contract for DTL2 was awarded earlier this year as a joint venture to GS Engineering and Construction Corp of Korea and Hock Lian Seng Infrastructure of Singapore.

A total of 10 civil contracts will be awarded for DTL2.
